"Elemental music is never just music. It is bound up with movement, dance, and speech, and so it is a form of music in which one must participate, in which one is involved not as a listener but as a co-performer." Carl Orff
"The American Orff-Schulwerk Association is a professional organization of educators dedicated to the creative music and movement approach developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman." (from the AOSA website).
It was my great pleasure to be able to teach the Orff method to young children for many years, in a classroom setting. We used many kinds of unpitched and pitched percussion instruments to create the most wonderful sounds. Our ensembles were exciting! The Orff method integrates music, movement, speech, and drama to build musicianship and release creativity which extends into their entire lives. Most importantly, we had fun! Every class was an adventure! We worked as a team through improv, composition, experimentation, and interpretation. We sang, we danced, we played instruments, we were serious, we were silly - we were musicians!
